February Fish Bite

February Fish Bite

The deal with the fish we caught last weekend was I wanted to put my boat in the water and run it.  My neighbor wanted to fish but didn’t want to put his boat in the water.  Between us, we caught 14 sheepshead.  I encouraged us to stop catching - I thought I’d be cleaning them all!  I didn’t know I was with a fish cleaner!

I caught a sheepshead in the surf years ago when the kids were little.  I really got hooked on winter sheepshead when I caught some off the jetties somewhere in Destin about that same time.

They spawn this time of year around rock pilings, inshore and offshore.  It’s all got to do with water temperature.  They’re just an overgrown bream, a seabream.

I always heard ‘em called poor man’s lobster.  The kids and the ole’ lady and I sure enjoyed dipping our forks in melted butter eating them!

Sheepshead are perfect this time of year.  They eat good and nothing else is biting much, at least that you can keep since they took trout from us in certain parts of Florida in February.
